Job Description:

As Chief Privacy Officer (CPO) at CPA Canada, you will play a vital role in the further development, implementation, compliance and governance of the policies and practices responsible for managing risks related to information privacy laws and regulations to protect employee member data.  The successful incumbent will possess strong leadership skills, serve as an expert in data privacy matters and the latest developments on the evolving data privacy landscape, and be a champion for CPA Canada by providing direction and oversight of the Privacy Office.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Building trust with privacy-conscious member groups and employees by communicating privacy goals and values both internally and externally
  • Prepare and interpret legal and other documents (e.g., contracts, statutes, correspondence, internal business initiatives) on privacy-related matters
  • Work in coordination with the Information Security, Legal and other departments to ensure compliance with data privacy and protection policies and applicable law by employees, extended workforce, and vendors
  • Manage CPA Canada’s policies, procedures and data governance, and drive privacy-related awareness and training among employees
  • Conducting Privacy Impact Assessments to identify risks in new or changed business activities
  • Designing controls for managing privacy compliance and leading incident response, including data breach preparedness
  • Ensure the privacy framework and directions align with the values and strategic direction of CPA Canada and within the broad framework and recommendations of the Legal, Privacy, Risk and Governance portfolio
  • Work with groups across the company to implement privacy by design and privacy compliance for business activities Perform periodic data privacy impact assessments and conduct related ongoing compliance monitoring activities
  • Partner with data owners to eliminate the risk and implement compensating and mitigating controls to reduce the risks
  • Serve as Chief Privacy Officer (CPO), leading CPA Canada’s privacy program and acting as an expert in data privacy matters
  • Liaise with the media concerning privacy matters as they pertain to CPA Canada
  • Monitor advancements in information privacy technologies to ensure organizational adaption and compliance
  • Administer a process for documenting, tracking, investigating, and acting on requests and complaints concerning CPA Canada’s privacy policies and procedures
  • Work with the Legal department to represent CPA Canada’s data privacy interest with external parties (federal, provincial as defined by PIPEDA and the Privacy Act)

Job Requirements:

  • Expertise in providing subject matter expertise on Canadian federal and provincial privacy statutes, including but not limited to PIPEDA and the Privacy Act
  • Possess highly effective organization, facilitation, written and oral communication, and presentation skills.
  • Office, including the expertise in developing comprehensive privacy frameworks, strategies, guidelines, policies, systems, processes and controls within a mid-sized or large organization
  • Strong ability to work with minimal supervision on a wide variety of tasks in a proactive manner within a fast-paced environment
  • Fluency in English is required; fluency in French (oral and written) is an asset.
  • Ability to build trust as an expert advisor and influence others without direct management authority
  • Strong judgement results in orientation, strategic thinking, and reasoning skills
  • Exceptional computer skills, including Microsoft Office, and the ability to learn and adopt new technologies
  • Demonstrated skills in collaboration, teamwork, and problem-solving to achieve goals

Qualification & Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years of related experience in Privacy Management, with at least 3+ years in providing direction and leadership of a Privacy
  • CIPP(C) or other related certification would be considered an asset.
