Job Description:
This position is located in the Department of Education, Office of Inspector General, Investigative Services. As a Criminal Investigator, the incumbent of this position will be responsible for investigations involving allegations of suspected violations of criminal statutes as they relate to fraud or corruption in various Department of Education programs.
Job Responsibilities:
- The Inspector General (IG) of the U.S. Department of Education heads an independent and objective organization responsible for audit, investigation, and other inspection services related to programs and operations of the Department. The IG provides leadership and coordination and recommends policies for activities designed to promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the administration of programs and operations as well as to prevent and detect fraud and abuse in such programs and operations. The IG is the principal advisor to the Secretary of the Department on the above matters and is responsible for keeping the Secretary and Congress fully and currently informed about problems and deficiencies relating to the administration of the Department’s programs and operations and the necessity for and progress of corrective action.
- Investigation Services (IS) is responsible for all investigative activities relating to the Department’s programs and operations and the prevention and detection of fraud and abuse in these programs and operations. IS also conducts, supervises, and coordinates investigations of suspected fraudulent activity by Departmental employees. IS is responsible for establishing the necessary procedures for coordination with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) on all criminal matters dealing with the Department’s programs and operations.
- The incumbent is a Criminal Investigator trainee who acquires skills by observing a senior investigator perform criminal investigation activities and who provides assistance to that investigator under close and constant supervision. The duties and responsibilities of the position are developmental.
- The incumbent plans and conducts investigations or portions of investigations that may require modification of the investigative plan concurrent with the investigation. Investigations usually involve subjects that require multiple inquiries to discover facts, but cases in which delicate issues and sensitive matters are not expected.
- Typically, the incumbent investigates simpler types of fraud, conspiracy, and corruption cases involving non-controversial matters or few minor controversial issues as they relate to fraud or corruption in various Department of Education program.

- 1. Knowledge of skills in law enforcement techniques.
- 2. Knowledge of analyzing records, complaints or allegations to identify issues in a case.
- 3. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- You may meet the minimum requirements for the GS-09 if you possess:
- One year of experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position (see description below).
Qualification & Experience:

- One year of experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position (see description below).
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with superior academic achievement (S.A.A.) which is based on class standing, grade-point average, or honor society membership; OR
- At least one full year of graduate level education (i.e., 18 semester hours); OR
- At least 1 year of qualifying specialized experience in, or related to, (1) exercising initiative; (2) attention to detail, judgment in collecting, assembling and developing facts, evidence or other pertinent data; (3) analyzing and evaluating data or evidence to arrive at sound conclusions including applying new information; and (4) partnering with or leading others in the accomplishment of mission activities.
