Job Description:

The Produce Inspector ensures that all fresh produce arriving, departing or stored at the division is inspected daily to ensure a consistent, high-quality state of product, and that applicable FSQA and compliance standards are being applied in the handling, transport, and storage of the product.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work primarily in refrigerated conditions all day
  • Be aware of any USF Compliance Alerts that pertain to the fresh produce category and monitor compliance
  • Determine the percent of defects from the representative samples
  • Be responsible for the quality of fresh produce items
  • Inspect and evaluate returned fresh produce before returning to stock or dumping
  • Inspect fresh produce in inventory, when needed.
  • Assist in minimizing shrinkage/spoilage of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Inspect incoming fresh produce
  • Use and calibrate thermometers
  • Possess knowledge of USDA grades and CVF specifications
  • Determine compliance to CVF specs, USDA grades, and Industry grades
  • Run select representative samples for examination
  • Be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Organize multiple tasks daily and be able to adjust as needed
  • Utilize the USDA inspection process when necessary
  • Share best practices for proper produce handling with the operations team
  • Read temperature recording devices and be able to determine the next steps if temps are out of the acceptable range during transit or at time of arrival
  • Work with and communicate effectively with the entire operations and replenishment team s
  • Be fully versed on all USF SOPs and monitor compliance
  • Execute the QC Sticker Strategy

Qualification & Experience:

  • Candidate should possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years produce inspecting experience or equivalent
  • Multiple task management ability
  • Be able to set priorities, meet deadlines, and able to accomplish team objectives.
  • Candidate should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills with computer competency, including Excel & Word.
  • Candidate will be able to use cameras or phones to transmit photos to convey issues noted or to communicate good quality to the customers and sales force when appropriate.
