Job Description:
This position provides administrative support for facilitating media coverage of the Senate (and House, where applicable) by the press, periodical press, radio-TV or still photograph media. Work includes providing administrative assistance to the director and other Gallery staff. Work also includes assisting
with the coordination of logistics for media events, such as press conferences, meetings, briefings, hearings, joint sessions, and special events. Work is performed under the supervision of a Media Gallery Deputy Director or other immediate supervisor.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assists in planning, organizing, coordinating, and implementing media events, including seating, restricted access, security, and lighting, for interviews, press conferences, meetings, quadrennial political conventions and inaugurals, Presidential debates, State of the Union addresses, major Congressional hearings, and related joint sessions or special events.
- Assists with issuing press credentials and press passes, distributing news releases, and making
arrangements for work space for Congressional press corps. - Assists with reviewing membership applications; processes membership dues and maintains membership data files.
- Answers phones and serves as receptionist for the Media Gallery.
- Attends and summarizes Senate pre-session meetings.
- Responds to routine inquiries concerning legislative and public affairs and Senate (and House, where applicable) policies and procedures.
- May research legislative issues for media and Senate (and House, where applicable) offices.
- May provide assistance in support of the computerized network of Gallery information and/or Gallery Internet website.
Job Requirements:
- Knowledge of current political events.
- Skill in the use of personal computers.
- Ability to accurately prepare and process a variety of reports, records, and documents using standard office equipment and systems such as databases, spreadsheets and word processing software.
- Ability to provide accurate responses to media inquiries.
- Ability to prepare and maintain records of events.
Qualification & Experience:
- Work requires an Associate’s Degree in journalism, communications, public relations or a related field; and one to three years of news media experience, preferably working with legislative bodies; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
