Job Description:

The Paralegal is responsible for a wide range of duties and assignments in support of the Enterprise Litigation team within the Legal Department. This position provides routine and less routine legal assistance to support the activities of the department, with a focus on Litigation. The position is responsible for providing support to the Litigation team, for gathering evidence and documents for attorney review, and indexing and curating information into a succinct format. The preferred candidate must demonstrate initiative, independent decision-making skills, and sound judgment to determine action or approach in non-routine assignments. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and organizational skills are required. Additionally, this position requires close attention to detail and accuracy. It is important that the individual in this position be comfortable and professional when working with confidential or sensitive information.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Supports Litigation functions, including responding to all legal process requests the Company receives, not limited to subpoenas, garnishments, and tax levies in accordance with applicable law and company procedures.
  • Provides direct legal support for multiple litigation attorneys and assists other litigation attorneys and paralegals with projects as required.
  • Independently researches, retrieves, and organizes company records in response to legal process requests and prepares and produces the materials to requesting parties in compliance with company procedures.
  • Categorizes, indexes and simplifies large amounts of factual information and curates into a succinct format.
  • Conducts legal and/or factual research as needed.
  • Drafts routine documents, correspondence, and presentations.
  • Develops a basic understanding of Lincoln’s core businesses.
  • Stays current with industry trends, relevant legal developments, and technology enhancements.
  • Develops a deep understanding of legal department electronic applications and technology such as Team Connect, Interwoven, e-discovery platforms, third-party file sharing sites, compliance repositories, and digital databases.
  • Remains current in profession and industry trends.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrates ability to evaluate information and the implications of a course of action or solution.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), including creating PowerPoint presentations using prescribed templates, and ability to manipulate Excel workbooks by sorting, filtering, and using formulas.
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload and multi-task while maintaining strict attention to detail.
  • Demonstrates the ability to use sound judgment and discretion regarding confidential information.
  • Successfully completes regulatory and job training requirements.

Qualification & Experience:

  • 2 – 3 Years of Paralegal experience, with an emphasis in Litigation. Relevant experience within a corporate legal department or law firm may be considered.
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret both internal and external documents such as policies and procedures and standard operating procedures.
  • Works with mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, averages and/or variances.
  • Ability to interpret and apply understanding to carry out a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Demonstrates ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrates solid relationship management skills with internal and/or external clients (e.g. management, peers, colleagues, customers).
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative style.
