Job Description:

  • As an Executive Support Officer, you will look after the day-to-day running of a busy prison, working as part of a close team to undertake a range of support services – everything from patrol duties and gatekeeping, to managing supplies, supervising visitors , and monitoring of phone calls and CCTV. You will work shifts and at night to make sure the prison is running properly. Unlike prison officers, your contact with offenders will be limited, although you may occasionally be involved with offenders, depending on the prison.
  • You do not need to be qualified to do this job. Helping keep a prison running smoothly and safely requires judgment, common sense, a responsible attitude and, above all, the ability to work as a team.

Job Responsibilities:

  • port guard duties: to ensure that staff, visitors and vehicles have safe access to and exit from the premises; inspect staff, prisoners, visitors, contractors and vehicles; provide staff with keys and radios and collect them
  • control room: operating the organisation’s radio system and monitoring CCTV ensuring all suspicious activity is reported
    visits: recording visits; identify and process visitors as they arrive, escort them when necessary
  • censorship / correspondence: monitoring / recording mail and reporting any illegal or prohibited items, keeping evidence
    night duties: ensuring that cell doors are locked / secured and all prisoners are safe in their cells
  • reception: assist in supporting appropriate reception tasks; photographing prisoners; collect and organize documentation for the property process; inspecting prisoners’ property and parcels and inspecting them with an X-ray machine; receiving items for prisoners and checking that the seals are intact on detained property
  • prisoner supervision: supervision of prisoners as required; undertaking prisoner clothing / property change and assisting officers to ensure easy circulation
  • transporting food: transporting and collecting the food trolley, possibly using an electric towing vehicle
  • driving duties: transporting prisoners and their escorts to their destination in the prisoner transport vehicle; collect mail from a local distribution office
  • telephone calls: monitoring the Personal Identification Number (PIN) system, keeping a record of prisoner requests for PIN telephone calls; complete all relevant paperwork and keep a record of all audit conversations; check that the legal numbers are registered solicitor numbers

Job Requirements:

  • 5 GCSE passes (or equivalent) grades A*-C, or NVQ Business Administration level II or Administrative experience. Relevant computer skills to undertake the level of work required.
