Job Description:

A Lead Engineer in this group will have a deep and broad experience in distribution and/or transmission system engineering & operations, including system planning, system protection, grid management, construction standards, etc.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Developing technical proposals and solutions from within the Operations Support group and applying them to solve the unique problems associated with accommodation of distributed resources. This will include working with other groups within Duke Energy, such as the ETO (Emerging Technology Office), Grid Solutions, Distribution & Transmission Engineering, etc.; this could also include working with external vendors.
  • Technical expertise in power systems, and project management skills are required. The incumbent must be able to assume the role of Subject Matter Expert as necessary, be an example to co-workers, as well as work constructively with existing engineering & operations resources such as Distribution & Transmission Standards, Transmission Planning, Transmission Engineering, Distribution Planning, Distribution Engineering, System Operations, Grid Solutions. This may include leading internal cross-functional team(s) that serve DET department and corporate initiatives or goals.
  • Communications and interaction with all levels in the organization, including senior management and regulatory officials.
  • Writing and editing technical documents such as interconnection requirements and policies.
  • Acting as the company’s technical representative, including as expert witness, when defending technical aspects of interconnection study methodology, in general and for specific projects.
  • Acting as technical consultant to assist internal interconnection studies, to be able to assist with atypical interconnection projects in the areas of voltage & thermal limits analysis, short circuit modeling and system protection analysis, and other areas.
  • Willingness to independently perform technical presentations to various parties, including regulators, company management, technical conferences, or other events as needed.
  • Performing and/or managing studies, R&D activities, ad-hoc technical analyses, and various other types of complex analytical work that seeks to investigate solutions to increasing DER penetration.
  • Involvement and leadership in industry standards work such as IEEE 1547 and UL 1741, to aid in positioning Duke Energy as a lead contributor in such standards development.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Fifteen (15) years of energy-related experience in an engineering, planning, system protection, and/or operations function in utility distribution systems.
  • Minimum of eight (8) plus years of engineering experience
  • Demonstrated industry leadership and industry expert reputation
  • Prior direct or related involvement in performing distribution interconnection studies for DER interconnections.
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer, preferably in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Indiana, or Kentucky, and the ability to secure licensure in any of the other states
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, with emphasis in Power Systems
  • Demonstrated written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Prior involvement in development of IEEE standards, especially IEEE 1547 or any of its related standards.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program OR a Master’s degree in Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
