Job Responsibilities:

  • Support of current systems (maintenance and improvement): auto, Sentry, mission design, Scout, etc.
  • Perform or lead orbit determination analyses in support of small-body missions and report directly to project scientists and team leads with analysis results, simulations and uncertainty analyses.
  • Perform complex and multifaceted job functions and activities across fields.
  • Maintenance of existing AWS assets using technologies including S3, Cloud Front, ALB, Lambda, and RDS.
  • Provide system-administration support for critical production servers running RedHat Enterprise Linux.
  • Perform navigation tasks which include: collection of data and inputs, weighting and processing of these data, estimation of the spacecraft’s orbital parameters and uncertainties along with the solve-for model parameters and uncertainties that describe the perturbations on the spacecraft including the gravity field of the central body.
  • Maintenance of database systems, including MySQL master and replicated systems both in-house and AWS.
  • Partners with other specialists or project personnel to perform cross-disciplines trade studies and analysis of alternatives through application of discipline-specific expertise.

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of industry and/or academic practices and standards across a range of applications related to software engineering, aerospace engineering, and navigation analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to present technical results to a wide audience.
  • Wide-ranging experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas: software architecture, asteroid survey, astronomy, and/or orbit determination.
  • Represents JPL through collaborating with representatives of organizations outside JPL.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of team’s progress and reports status to management and internal organizations.
    Solid understanding and wide application of sophisticated principles, theories, concepts and techniques in software engineering, orbit determination, and astronomy field resulting in contributions to the development of new theories and methods.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical field with typically a minimum of 6 years of related experience; Master’s degree in similar fields with a minimum of 4 years of related experience; or PhD in similar fields with a minimum of 2 years related experience, PhD strongly preferred.
  • Experience as a System Administrator or equivalent activities with current Linux operating systems (especially RedHat Enterprise Linux).
  • Experience as a Database Administrator (DBA) for MySQL or a proven understanding of and ability to perform the skills required as a DBA.
  • Software design, coding, and management experience.
  • Proficient at diagnosing anomalies in systems (OS, database, etc.) and software.
