Job Responsibilities:

  • Develops processes and policy for ensuring consistent statewide Department operations; resolves operations policy differences and ensures effective coordination and implementation of statewide wildlife and fisheries programs.
  • Oversees the Wildlife Branch, Fisheries Branch, and the Watershed Restoration Branch; responsible for all aspects of implementing wildlife, fisheries, land management, cooperative conservation program and statewide biological resources databases.
  • Works closely with the Branch Managers, Regional Managers and Deputy Directors, providing leadership and oversight of all aspects of Wildlife and Fisheries Division operations including development and refinement of branch roles and responsibilities for managing CDFW lands for the benefit of wildlife and fisheries.
  • Coordinates with the Ecosystem Conservation Division Deputy Director, Law Enforcement Division Deputy Director and Regional Managers to promote integration of Department policies into operation of regional functions and programs.
  • Represents CDFW on the Fish and Game Commission and on other high-level task forces and committees, before the legislature, and at conferences and meetings with various governmental and constituent organizations concerned with or affected by efforts to conserve fish and wildlife resources.
  • Effectively leads the Wildlife and Fisheries Division Branch Managers to develop, articulate, and implement policies related to all aspects of program operations including program staffing and funding alignment, setting funding and personnel priorities, management of CDFW lands and facilities, implementing information and data technology systems related to biological resources, and defining branch functions.

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of CDFW’s programs, policies, procedures, and overall mission.
  • Ability to foster an atmosphere of creativity, open communication, and inclusion to ensure frequent exchange of information among staff and stakeholders. Including the ability to manage conflict and build consensus.
  • Ability to effectively identify and communicate/advise on emerging or developing issues that could have an immediate impact on CDFW programs.
  • Knowledge of California’s environmental laws, natural resources, Fish and Game Code and regulations; ecosystem assessment methodologies; conservation planning and landowner incentive programs, and other fish and wildlife programs for the purpose of evaluation and development programs.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with diverse public, private, local, State, Tribal and Federal government entities and stakeholders involved with California’s fish and wildlife issues.
  • Demonstrated experience initiating and participating in organization-wide planning efforts. Specifically, managing a multi-disciplinary team, including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance.
