Job Description:

The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) regulates the manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of tobacco products. Our goal is to reduce the harm from all regulated tobacco products across the entire population, including reducing the number of people who start to use tobacco products, encouraging more people to stop using these products, and reducing the adverse health impact for those who continue to use these products. CTP’s actions have significant public health and consumer protection impact and are among the most important issues faced by the Agency in its long and distinguished history.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize and direct studies to isolate and define the product science aspects contributing to public health issues and problems. Develops strategies and programs to understand and address the population component of public health issues.
  • Serve as a Branch Chief in the Office of Science.
  • Supervise a staff of engineers, Plan and schedule work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust long and short term priorities and prepare schedules for completion of work when necessary.
  • Serve as an engineer expert in matters related to a designated area of responsibility. Advise and assist the Center Director, Deputy Director and other key official on engineering issues that have impact on policy, direction, and long-range goals.
  • Collaborate with other CTP/Agency staff in the design of public health programs, to understand and incorporate engineering aspects in an integrated approach to disease or injury prevention.

Job Requirements:

  • A. Must have a Degree in Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor’s degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
  • B. Have a combination of education and experience — college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
