Job Description:

The United States Attorney’s Office is the chief law enforcement office in the District and is responsible for representing the federal government in virtually all litigation involving the United States in the Northern District of Indiana. This includes criminal prosecutions for violations of federal law, civil lawsuits by and against the government, and actions to collect judgments and restitution on behalf of victims and taxpayers.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Examining, preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels;
  • Proofreading and cite checking legal briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents;
  • Providing assistance to attorneys in trial preparation by conducting non-complex research of litigation, statutes, regulations and court cases;
  • Assembling exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents;
  • Assembling and organizing files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository;
  • Maintaining calendar of assigned active cases;
  • Tracking filing, hearing, and trials dates, and scheduling conference and interviews;
  • Arranging travel by preparing itinerary and securing transportation and hotel reservations;
  • Producing a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications.

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National

  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit checks, tax checks, and drug testing.
  • Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. DOJ employees are required to undergo background re-investigation every 5 years to retain employment.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Specialized Experience: At least one (1) year of specialized experience reviewing documents with legal implications for accuracy and completeness (e.g., court documents, real estate documents, contracts, insurance or benefits claims, mortgage or loan applications, tax forms, or other types of legal documents); typing and formatting correspondence and forms; maintaining file systems; and obtaining needed information from files or general reference sources. This experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the Federal service and could have been gained in the federal, public, or private sector.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or 4 years of education above high school level in any field. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
  • Combination of Experience and Education: Combinations of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, college education must be in excess of 60 semester hours or beyond the second year.
