Climate Energy Balance Scientist – Jobs at JPL

Job Description:

The position is to develop an energy balance research elements at JPL that will connect to ongoing sea level rise research and will contribute to NASA goals on Earth’s energy balance science generally. This is an important area of science development for JPL as it provides a missing integrating link between many research threads, including ocean altimetry and GRACE, the energy budget measurements of PREFIRE, and the cloud and aerosol research activities of CloudSat, AIRS, and MISR among others as these are all connected through Earth’s energy balance. It is expected that the research developed by the successful candidate will develop and forge the integration of these JPL research activities.

Job Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will provide ongoing research focused on development of new observing approaches including participating in Earth Ventures Continuity proposal and related activities. The candidate will be expected to work with other scientists at JPL and elsewhere to analyze and interpret data from an array of instruments, present their research at conferences and in journal articles, develop proposals for NASA ROSES solicitations and other funding opportunities, and participate in establishing the science foundation and requirements for future satellite missions.

Job Requirements:

• Eagerness to work with scientists and support staff from JPL and elsewhere in a highly collaborative flight project environment.
• Experience in NASA satellite mission concept development
• Demonstrated capability of writing successful proposals as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator to NASA ROSES

Qualification & Experience:

• Ph. D in Atmospheric Science or Remote Sensing or related scientific discipline. Three years experience beyond a Ph. D is strongly preferred.
• Experience in the analysis of multiple sources of data needed to provide an integrative view of the Earth’s energy balance,
• Demonstrated publication record and a record of engagement in energy balance science and in peer review activities and experience in scientific programming and statistical analysis.
• Strong expertise in the topic of Earth’s energy balance, have a working knowledge on GRACE and on CERES data products and on CLOUDSAT and other A-Train related data products and on data relating to heat transports by oceans.
• Understanding of, and prior contributions to, current issues in Earth’s energetics related research with emphasis on energy balance, transport and ocean heat uptake.
• A strong record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at major international scientific meetings and conferences.
• Excellent oral (including public speaking) and written communication skills.
• Familiarity with climate data analysis and related data sets.
