Job Description:

  • This position is located in CDC’s Office of the Deputy Director for Non-Infectious Diseases (ODDNID), National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), Division of Violence Prevention (DVP). DVP is committed to stopping violence before it begins.
  • Monitoring violence-related behaviors, injuries, and deaths;
  • Conducting research on the factors that put people at risk or protect them from violence;
  • Developing and evaluating the effectiveness of violence prevention strategies, programs, and policies;
  • Helping state and local partners plan, implement, and evaluate prevention programs; and
  • Conducting research on the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based prevention strategies, programs, and policies and ensuring their widespread adoption.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design and conduct scientific studies and research using behavioral and social science perspectives for the primary prevention of violence, with a focus on the prevention of community violence and its consequences, especially including the prevention of youth violence.
  • Apply expertise to collect, analyze and interpret complex data from diverse sources, using appropriate quantitative, qualitative and/or mixed methods.
  • Independently assess and document accomplishments and recommend changes in processes, procedures and/or policies to improve the effectiveness of violence prevention strategies and approaches.
  • Prepare scientific and other articles and technical reports for peer-review publication and presentation at local, state and national workshops and conferences.
  • Use comprehensive conceptual frameworks, interpret, and apply guidelines, assess program effectiveness and analyze and resolve challenging issues and problems.
  • Collaborate with internal staff and external government agencies, private organizations, and other stakeholders to develop and accomplish program objectives.
  • Provide technical assistance and consulting, and scientific oversight of complex and innovative violence prevention surveillance, research, or evaluation projects.
  • Identify and define the behavioral aspects of violence prevention using theory-based paradigms from the scientific literature.
  • Support the mentoring and professional development of students, fellows, junior staff and/or partners.
